Applications for Original Licenses
Original licenses are currently restricted to newly constructed projects or existing projects that come under the Commission's jurisdiction. Licenses are for a 30- to 50-year period. A license conveys the right of eminent domain.
Applications for New Licenses (Relicenses)
Projects undergoing relicensing make up the majority of the proposals being evaluated by the hydropower licensing staff of the Office of Energy Projects. The commission has three licensing processes.

Annual Charges 2006-2010
The Commission receives an annual appropriation from Congress to defray its operating costs and recovers 100 percent of this appropriation through the collection of annual charges and filing fees.
Exemptions from Licensing
In certain cases, projects may qualify for an exemption from licensing. Those receiving an exemption are exempt from the requirements of Part I of the Federal Power Act.
