Taum Sauk Pumped Storage Project (No. P-2277), Dam Breach Incident
Project Description

Schematic Diagram Text Equivalent

At night when there is little demand for electricity, water is pumped back up to the upper reservoir by pumps located at the lower reservoir dam and powerhouse. When demand of electricity is high during the day time, water is allowed to fall through a 7,000-foot long tunnel toward the lower reservoir powerhouse. There the water turns turbines and generates up to 470 megawatts of electricity during peak load periods.
