Pride Month is dedicated to bringing visibility, empowerment, and knowledge to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community. It takes place each year in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots, where protestors demanded the establishment of places where LGBTQIA+ people could go and be open about their sexual orientation without fear of arrest. Pride Month is for everyone to embrace who they are and let the world know. It promotes their dignity, equal rights, self-affirmation and is a way of increasing society’s awareness of the issues they face. Although attitudes and injustice remain, we have come a long way since the riots of 1969 and by continuing in this long-standing tradition we continue to raise awareness, improve the attitudes of society, and encourage inclusiveness.

As FERC celebrates Pride Month, let’s take a few moments to learn more about the history of LGBTQIA+ rights, what Pride is, and how to take care of the mental health of loved ones in the LGBTQIA+ community. FERC invites you this Pride Month to celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and to demonstrate allyship by supporting FERC’s LGBTQIA+ program and activities.  Let’s keep standing in solidarity to make history for the LGBTQIA+ community!
