Diversity and inclusion are essential to the successful implementation of the Commission's Strategic Plan. FERC relies on the talents and capabilities of employees of different ages, races, ethnicities, physical abilities, genders, and sexual orientations to ensure effective oversight of the energy industry by creating a work environment that maximizes the potential of all employees.

Some of the programs and observances that help FERC to promote a diverse workforce are: M.L. King, Jr. Week, Black History Month, Women's History Month, Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Women's Equality Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, Disability Employment Awareness Month, Native American Heritage Month and more.

The National Organization on Disability (NOD) focuses on increasing employment opportunities for Americans with disabilities.  FERC participated in the 2023 NOD Employment Tracker and demonstrated commitment to assessing, understanding, and addressing barriers by:

  • Tracking talent outcomes for individuals with disabilities, including applicants, hires, self-ID rates, promotions, and turnover.
  • Ensuring accessibility of technology and materials and administering accommodations processes.
  • Embedding veteran recruitment in FERC’s business processes and internal and external communications.

To attract, develop, and retain a diverse workforce, we apply several key principles. First, we maintain a respectful work environment free from harassment and discrimination. Secondly, FERC actively recruits and hires qualified employees from all groups of individuals. Finally, we continue to remind our employees that a truly diverse workforce is essential to achieving Commission goals. FERC has several Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs are voluntary, employee-driven groups that focus on shared interests and experiences and look to apply those perspectives to initiatives that create value for the Commission. They are a critical link between employees and senior management, connecting a diverse array of backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences to the Commission’s management, Human Capital staff, and key decision makers. Learn more about our nine Employee Resource Groups below.
